HANOI/KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Electronics worth a year-high $74 million, such as solar panels and microchips mostly from Malaysia and Vietnam, were denied entry in the United States in September or were checked for components from forced labour in China, official data show. In September alone, $82 million worth of shipments were either refused or were held for checks -- 90% of which were electronics -- a jump from less than $20 million in August. Over two-thirds of rejected or held cargoes came from Malaysia or Vietnam, which are major exporters to the United States of solar panels and semiconductors. Malaysia and Vietnam have had cargoes worth about $320 million each denied or held for checks since the new rules came into force, nearly three times more than China's. Washington has accused China of genocide against the Uyghurs, with rights groups denouncing a widespread use of internment camps and forced labour.

The weak property sector recovery likely has exerted “persistent” downward pressure on the factory-gate prices, they added. A slump in the property sector affects demand for key raw materials such as steel and cement, which are key parts of the producer price index. Producer deflation will likely deteriorate, with the PPI expected to drop further by 3.9% on falling global commodity prices. Deflation is bad for the economy because, in such an environment, consumers and companies may put off spending in anticipation of prices falling further, which would only exacerbate economic problems.

An image of a customs agent discovering a shipment of beer cans disguised as Pepsi has been falsely linked to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Nearly 2,000 people have reacted to a Nov. 24 Facebook post which suggests the image shows Heineken cans that were smuggled into the tournament’s host country by football fans (here). But the image can be traced back to 2015 in Saudi Arabia (see bit.ly/3ud5lZf). Alcohol is banned in Saudi Arabia (here). The photo is from Saudi Arabia in 2015, not the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

The customs authority says Pernod did so to evade full payment of import taxes.
